Acts 9:20. And right away he preached Christ in
the synagogues, that he is the Son of God. 21. But all that heard him
were amazed, and said; Is not this he that destroyed them which called
on this name in Jerusalem, and came here for that intent, that he might
bring them bound to the chief priests? 22. But Saul increased the more
in strength, and confounded the Jews which dwelt at Damascus, proving
that this is very Christ. 23. And after that many days were fulfilled,
the Jews took counsel to kill him: 24. But their laying await was known
of Saul. And they watched the gates day and night to kill him. 25. Then
the disciples took him by night, and let him down by the wall in a
basket.26. And when Saul was come to Jerusalem, he tried to join himself
to the disciples: but they were all afraid of him, and did not believe
that he was a disciple. 27. But Barnabas took him, and brought him to
the apostles, and declared unto them how he had seen the Lord in the
way, and that he had spoken to him, and how he had preached boldly at
Damascus in the name of Jesus. 28. And he was with them coming in and
going out at Jerusalem. 29. And he spoke boldly in the name of the Lord
Jesus, and disputed against the Grecians: but they went about to slay
him. 30. Which when the brothers knew, they brought him down to
Caesarea, and sent him forth to Tarsus.
Acts 13:43. Now when the congregation was
broken up, many of the Jews and religious proselytes followed Paul and
Barnabas: who, speaking to them, persuaded them to continue in the grace
of God. 44. And the next Sabbath day came almost the whole city together
to hear the word of God. 45. But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they
were filled with envy, and spoke against those things which were spoken
by Paul, contradicting and blaspheming. 46. Then Paul and Barnabas waxed
bold, and said, It was necessary that the word of God should first have
been spoken to you: but seeing ye put it from you, and judge yourselves
unworthy of everlasting life, lo, we turn to the Gentiles. 47. For so
has the Lord commanded us, saying, I have set you to be a light of the
Gentiles, that you should be for salvation to the ends of the earth. 48.
And when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad, and glorified the word
of the Lord: and as many as were ordained to eternal life believed. 49.
And the word of the Lord was published throughout all the region. 50.
But the Jews stirred up the devout and honorable women, and the chief
men of the city, and raised persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and
expelled them out of their coasts. Act 14:1. And it came to pass in
Iconium, that they went both together into the synagogue of the Jews,
and so spoke, that a great multitude both of the Jews and also of the
Greeks believed. 2. But the unbelieving Jews stirred up the Gentiles,
and made their minds evil affected against the brothers. 3. A Long time
therefore they stayed speaking boldly in the Lord, which gave
testimony unto the word of his grace, and granted signs and wonders to
be done by their hands. 4. But the multitude of the city was divided:
and part held with the Jews, and part with the apostles. 5. And when
there was an assault made both of the Gentiles, and also of the Jews
with their rulers, to use them despitefully, and to stone them, 6. They
were ware of it, and fled to Lystra and Derbe, cities of Lycaonia, and
to the region that lies round about: 7. And there they preached the
gospel.8. And there sat a certain man at Lystra, impotent in his feet,
being a cripple from his mother's womb, who never had walked: 9. The
same heard Paul speak: who steadfastly looking at him, and perceiving
that he had faith to be healed, 10. Said with a loud voice, Stand
upright on your feet. And he leaped and walked. 11. And when the people
saw what Paul had done, they lifted up their voices, saying in the
speech of Lycaonia, The gods are come down to us in the likeness of men.
12. And they called Barnabas, Jupiter; and Paul, Mercurius, because he
was the chief speaker. 13. Then the priest of Jupiter, which was before
their city, brought oxen and garlands unto the gates, and would have
done sacrifice with the people. 14. Which when the apostles, Barnabas
and Paul, heard of, they tore their clothes, and ran in among the
people, crying out, 15. And saying, Sirs, why dare you doing these
things? We also are men of like passions with you, and preach to you
that ye should turn from these vanities to the living God, which made
heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all things that are therein: 16. Who
in times past suffered all nations to walk in their own ways. 17.
Nevertheless he left not himself without witness, in that he did good,
and gave us rain from heaven, and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts
with food and gladness. 18. And with these sayings scarce restrained
they the people, that they had not done sacrifice unto them. 19. Then
there came t certain Jews from Antioch and Iconium, who persuaded the
people, and, having stoned Paul, drew him out of the city, supposing he
had been dead. 20. Howbeit, as the disciples stood round about him, he
rose up, and came into the city: and the next day he departed with
Barnabas to Derbe.
Acts 16:16. And it came to pass, as we went to
prayer, a certain damsel possessed with a spirit of divination met us,
which brought her masters much gain by soothsaying: 17. The same
followed Paul and us, and cried, saying, These men are the servants of
the most high God, which show us the way of salvation. 18. And
this did she many days. But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the
spirit, I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.
And he came out the same hour. 19. And when her masters saw that the
hope of their gains was gone, they caught Paul and Silas, and brought
them into the marketplace to the rulers, 20. And brought them to the
magistrates, saying, These men, being Jews, do exceedingly trouble our
city, 21. And teach customs, which are not lawful for us to receive,
neither to observe, being Romans. 22. And the multitude rose up together
against them: and the magistrates rent off their clothes, and commanded
to beat them. 23. And when they had laid many stripes upon them, they
cast them into prison, charging the jailor to keep them safely: 24. Who,
having received such a charge, thrust them into the inner prison, and
made their feet fast in the stocks....35. And when it was day, the
magistrates sent the sergeants, saying, Let those men go. 36. And the
keeper of the prison told this saying to Paul, The magistrates have sent
to let you go: now therefore depart, and go in peace. 37. But Paul said
to them, They have beaten us openly uncondemned, being Romans, and have
cast us into prison; and now do they thrust us out in secret? No;
let them come themselves and release us. 38. And the sergeants told
these words unto the magistrates: they feared, when they heard
that they were Romans. 39. And they came and besought them, and brought
them out, and desired them to depart out of the city.
Acts 17:1. Now when they had passed through
Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where was a
synagogue of the Jews: 2. And Paul, as his manner was, went to them, and
three Sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures, 3. Opening
and alleging, that Christ needed to suffer, and rise again from the
dead; and that this Jesus, whom I preach unto you, is Christ. 4. And
some of them believed, and consorted with Paul and Silas; and of the
devout Greeks a great multitude, and of the chief women not a few. 5.
But the Jews which believed not, moved with envy, got
certain lewd fellows of the baser sort, and gathered a company, and set
all the city on an uproar, and assaulted the house of Jason, and sought
to bring them out to the people. 6. And when they found them not, they
drew Jason and certain brothers to the rulers of the city, crying, These
that have turned the world upside down are come here also; 7. Whom Jason
has received: and these all do contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying
that there is another king, one Jesus. 8. And they troubled the people
and the rulers of the city, when they heard these things. 9. And when
they had taken security of Jason, and of the other, they let them go.
10. And the brothers immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night to
Berea: who coming there they went into the synagogue of the Jews. 11.
These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received
the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily,
whether those things were so. 12. Therefore many of them believed; also
of honorable women which were Greeks, and of men, not a few. 13. But
when the Jews of Thessalonica had knowledge that the word of God was
preached of Paul at Berea, they came there also, and stirred up the
people. 14. And then immediately the brothers sent away Paul to go as it
were to the sea: but Silas and Timotheus abode there still.
There are many more examples but Paul's own
testimony about this will cover it.
24. Of the Jews five times received I thirty
nine strips. 25. Three times was I beaten with rods, once was I stoned,
three times I suffered shipwreck, a night and a day I have been in the
deep; 26. In journeyings often, in perils of waters, in perils of
robbers, in perils by my own countrymen, in perils by the heathen, in
perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea,
in perils among false brothers; 27. In weariness and painfulness, not
sleeping often, in hunger and thirst, in fasting often, in cold and
nakedness. 28. Beside those things that are without, that which comes
upon me daily, the care of all the churches. 29. Who is weak, and I am
not weak? who is offended, and I burn not? 30. If I need to glory,
I will glory of the things which concern my infirmities. 31. The God and
Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which is blessed for evermore, knows
that I lie not. 32. In Damascus the governor under Aretas the king kept
the city of the Damascenes with a garrison, desirous to apprehend me:
33. And through a window in a basket was I let down by the wall, and
escaped his hands.
