Matthew 25:1 Then
shall the kingdom of heaven be likened to ten virgins, which took their
lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom. 2 And five of them were
wise, and five were foolish. 3 They that were foolish took their lamps,
and took no oil with them: 4 But the wise took oil in their vessels with
their lamps. 5 While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and
slept. 6 And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom
comes; go you out to meet him. 7 Then all those virgins arose, and
trimmed their lamps. 8 And the foolish said to the wise, Give us of your
oil; for our lamps are gone out. 9 But the wise answered, saying, Not
so; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go you rather to them
that sell, and buy for yourselves. 10 And while they went to buy, the
bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the
marriage: and the door was shut. 11 Afterward came also the other
virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us. 12 But he answered and said,
Truly I say to you, I know you not. 13 Watch therefore, for you know
neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man comes
Jesus is
revealing the glory of the second covenant compared to the first in this
miraculous scene at the wedding.
John 2:1 And the
third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of
Jesus was there: 2 And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the
marriage. 3 And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus said to him,
They have no wine. 4 Jesus said to her, Woman, what have I to do with
you? my hour is not yet come. 5 His mother said to the servants,
Whatever he said to you, do it. 6 And there were set there six water
pots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing
two or three firkins apiece. 7 Jesus said to them, Fill the water pots
with water. And they filled them up to the brim. 8 And he said to them,
Draw out now, and bear to the governor of the feast. And they bore it. 9
When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and
knew not from where it was: (but the servants which drew the water
knew;) the governor of the feast called the
bridegroom, 10 And said to him, Every
man at the beginning does set forth good wine; and when men have well
drunk, then that which is worse: but you have kept the good wine until
now. 11 This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee,
and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him.
Luke 5:33 And
they said to him, Why do the disciples of John fast often, and make
prayers, and likewise the disciples of the Pharisees; but your eat and
drink? 34 And he said to them, Can you make the children of the bridal
chamber fast, while the bridegroom is with
them? 35 But the days will come, when
the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then shall they
fast in those days.
John 3:25 Then
there arose a question between some of John's disciples and the Jews
about purifying. 26 And they came to John, and said to him, Rabbi, he
that was with you beyond Jordan, to whom you bore witness, behold, the
same baptizes, and all men come to him. 27 John answered and said, A man
can receive nothing, except it be given him from heaven. 28 You
yourselves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but that I
am sent before him. 29 He that has the bride
is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, which stands and
hears him, rejoices greatly because of the bridegroom's voice:
this my joy therefore is fulfilled.
