In these verses of these books all of
these prophesies against Jerusalem and the nations round about them were
in reference to Nebuchadnezzar's Babylonian conquest of them.
Jeremiah
4:4 Circumcise yourselves to the LORD, and take away the foreskins of
your heart, you men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem:
lest my fury
come forth like fire, and burn that none can quench it, because of the
evil of your doings.
5:14 Wherefore thus says the LORD God of hosts, Because you speak this
word, behold, I will make my words in your mouth fire, and this people
wood, and it shall devour them.
15:14 And I will make you to pass with
your enemies into a land which you know not: for a fire is kindled in
mine anger, which shall burn upon you.
48:45 They that fled stood under the shadow of Heshbon because of the
force: but a fire shall come forth out of Heshbon, and a flame from the
midst of Sihon, and shall devour the corner of Moab, and the crown of
the head of the tumultuous ones
49:27 And I will kindle a fire in the wall of Damascus, and it shall
consume the palaces of Benhadad.
50:32 And the most proud shall stumble and fall, and none shall raise
him up: and I will kindle a fire in his cities, and it shall devour all
round about him.
Lamentations
2:4 He (The Lord) has bent his bow like an enemy:
he stood with his right hand as an adversary, and slew all that were
pleasant to the eye in the tabernacle of the daughter of Zion:
he poured
out his fury like fire.
4:11 The LORD has accomplished his fury; he has poured out his fierce
anger, and has kindled a fire in Zion, and it has devoured its
foundations.
Ezekiel
15:6 Therefore thus says the Lord GOD; As the vine tree among the trees
of the forest, which I have given to the fire for fuel, so will I give
the inhabitants of Jerusalem. 7 And I will set my face against them;
they shall go out from one fire, and another fire shall devour them; and
you shall know that I am the LORD, when I set my face against them.
21:31 And I will pour out my indignation upon you, I will blow against
you in the fire of my wrath, and deliver you into the hand of brutish
men skillful to destroy.
22:31 Therefore have I poured out my indignation upon them;
I have
consumed them with the fire of my wrath: their own way have I
recompensed upon their heads, says the Lord GOD.
30:8 And they shall know that I am the LORD, when I have set a fire in
Egypt, and when all her helpers shall be destroyed.
Amos
1:3 Thus says the LORD; For three transgressions of Damascus, and for
four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they have
threshed Gilead with threshing instruments of iron:
4 But I will send a fire into the house of
Hazael, which shall devour the palaces of Benhadad. 5 I will
break also the bar of Damascus, and cut off the inhabitant from the
plain of Aven, and him that holds the scepter from the house of Eden:
and the people of Syria shall go into captivity into Kir, says the LORD.
6 Thus says the LORD; For three transgressions of Gaza, and for four, I
will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they carried away
captive the whole captivity, to deliver them up to Edom:
7 But I will send a fire on the wall of Gaza,
which shall devour its palaces 8 And I will cut off the
inhabitant from Ashdod, and him that holds the scepter from Ashkelon,
and I will turn my hand against Ekron: and the remnant of the
Philistines shall perish, saith the Lord GOD. 9 Thus saith the LORD; For
three transgressions of Tyrus, and for four, I will not turn away the
punishment thereof; because they delivered up the whole captivity to
Edom, and remembered not the brotherly covenant:
10 But I will send a fire on the wall of
Tyrus, which shall devour the palaces. 11 Thus says the LORD; For
three transgressions of Edom, and for four, I will not turn away the
punishment thereof; because he did pursue his brother with the sword,
and did cast off all pity, and his anger did tear perpetually, and he
kept his wrath for ever: 12 But I will send a
fire upon Teman, which shall devour the palaces of Bozrah. 13
Thus says the LORD; For three transgressions of the children of Ammon,
and for four, I will not turn away the punishment; because they have
ripped up the women with child of Gilead, that they might enlarge their
border: 14 But I will kindle a fire in the
wall of Rabbah, and it shall devour the palaces thereof, with shouting
in the day of battle, with a tempest in the day of the whirlwind:
15 And their king shall go into captivity, he and his princes together,
says the LORD.
2:1 Thus says the LORD; For three transgressions of Moab, and for four,
I will not turn away the punishment; because he burned the bones of the
king of Edom into lime: 2 But I will send a
fire upon Moab, and it shall devour the palaces of Kerioth: and Moab
shall die with tumult, with shouting, and with the sound of the trumpet:
3 And I will cut off the judge from the midst of it, and will slay all
its princes with him, says the LORD. 4 Thus says the LORD; For three
transgressions of Judah, and for four, I will not turn away the
punishment; because they have despised the law of the LORD, and have not
kept his commandments, and their lies caused them to err, after the
which their fathers have walked: 5 But I will
send a fire upon Judah, and it shall devour the palaces of Jerusalem.
Isaiah
26:11 LORD, when your hand is lifted up, they will not see: but they
shall see, and be ashamed for their envy at the people; yes,
the fire of
your enemies shall devour them.
31:9 And he shall pass over to his strong hold for fear, and his
princes shall be afraid of the ensign, says the LORD,
whose fire is in
Zion, and his furnace in Jerusalem.
42:25 Therefore he has poured upon him the fury of his anger, and the
strength of battle: and it hath set him on fire round about, yet he knew
not; and it burned him, yet he laid it not to heart.
These verses in Zephaniah and Isaiah
prophesy about the judgment of God against the four empires. It speaks
of the Gospel going out to the world, the New Jerusalem, and the wrath
of God against the Gogs and Magogs of the world.
Zephaniah 3:8
Therefore you wait upon me, says the LORD, until the day that I rise up
to the prey: for my determination is to gather the nations, that I may
assemble the kingdoms, to pour upon them mine
indignation, even all my fierce anger: for all the earth shall be
devoured with the fire of my jealousy. 9 For then will I turn to
the people a pure language, that they may all call upon the name of the
LORD, to serve him with one consent. 10 From beyond the rivers of
Ethiopia my suppliants, even the daughter of my dispersed, shall bring
mine offering. 11 In that day shall you not be ashamed for all your
doings? In that you transgressed against me: for then I will take away
out of the midst of you them that rejoice in your pride, and you shalt
no more be haughty because of my holy mountain. 12 I will also leave in
the midst of you an afflicted and poor people, and they shall trust in
the name of the LORD. 13 The remnant of Israel shall not do iniquity,
nor speak lies; neither shall a deceitful tongue be found in their
mouth: for they shall feed and lie down, and none shall make them
afraid. 14 Sing, O daughter of Zion; shout, O Israel; be glad and
rejoice with all the heart, O daughter of Jerusalem. 15 The LORD hath
taken away your judgments, he hath cast out your enemy: the king of
Israel, even the LORD, is in the midst of you: you shall not see evil
any more. 16 In that day it shall be said to Jerusalem, Fear not: and to
Zion, Let not your hands be slack. 17 The LORD your God in the midst of
you is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over you with joy; he will
rest in his love, he will joy over you with singing. 18 I will gather
them that are sorrowful for the solemn assembly, who are of you, to whom
the reproach of it was a burden. 19 Behold, at that time I will undo all
that afflict you: and I will save her that halts, and gather her that
was driven out; and I will get them praise and fame in every land where
they have been put to shame. 20 At that time will I bring you again,
even in the time that I gather you: for I will make you a name and a
praise among all people of the earth, when I turn back your captivity
before your eyes, says the LORD.
Isaiah 66:10 Rejoice with Jerusalem, and be glad with
her, all you that love her: rejoice for joy with her, all you that mourn
for her: 11 That you may suck, and be satisfied with the breasts of her
consolations; that you may milk out, and be delighted with the abundance
of her glory. 12 For thus says the LORD, Behold, I will extend peace to
her like a river, and the glory of the Gentiles like a flowing stream:
then shall you suck, you shall be borne upon her sides, and be dandled
upon her knees. 13 As one whom his mother comforted, so will I comfort
you; and you shall be comforted in Jerusalem. 14 And when you see this,
your heart shall rejoice, and your bones shall flourish like an herb:
and the hand of the LORD shall be known toward his servants,
and his indignation toward his enemies. 15
For, behold, the LORD will come with fire, and with his chariots like a
whirlwind, to render his anger with fury, and his rebuke with flames of
fire. 16 For by fire and by his sword will the LORD plead with all
flesh: and the slain of the LORD shall be many. 17 They that sanctify
themselves, and purify themselves in the gardens behind one tree in the
midst, eating swine's flesh, and the abomination, and the mouse, shall
be consumed together, says the LORD
